One hundred years ago, in 1919, the ideal makeup face was inspired by Hollywood and seen mostly in movie stars. In the 1940s and 1950s, everyone was using red lipstick and other beauty products that complemented their natural qualities. Throughout most of the 1900s, beauty products were manufactured only for fair-skinned women. But in the 1970s, darker shades came onto the market with the emergence of new cosmetic brands.
Beauty standards changed frequently between the 1970s and 1990s. Some women stopped wearing makeup altogether, while others preferred bright colors for the day. Today, the ideal face of makeup is usually geared towards evoking glamor. Makeup fashion is constantly evolving. And over the last 100 years, society has constantly changed its mind about what the ideal makeup face should look like.
For example, in the early 1900s, lips were the focal point of the face, and make-up was often used with sharp lines. However, in the 1950s a more rounded make-up in bright red hues became common. Similarly, popular eye makeup has changed drastically. Few color choices were popular in the 1930s, while pastel eyeshadows were popular in the 1980s.

Between 1900 and 1919, makeup was done almost exclusively by movie stars and musicians. However, although there were limited consumers in those years, some important advances were made in the cosmetics industry. Max Factor set up its own beauty lab in 1909, and the first metal lipstick tube was invented in 1915.
Both developments influenced society’s preferred makeup look in the early 1900s. For a decade, makeup-wearing women favored pale, powdery skin and blotchy lips.

Some women even shaved their eyebrows completely and drew fine lines with a pencil.

II. World War II affected the 1940s
World War II greatly affected the standard make-up look of the 1940s. Cosmetics in the 1940s were often hard to come by because of the war, and it was heavily taxed as a luxury item in many countries. Lip products, in particular, were favored by government officials as they were considered to be a morale booster for women living during the war. As a result, the ideal makeup face in the 1940s was red lipstick focused. Eyebrows are usually shaped like a rounded arch, and eye shadow and blush are used sparingly.
