Forget ears, wrists or neck; This season, the focus of accessories is changing. The trend of wearing underwear as outerwear brings a dramatic style update to micro-tops, inspired by accessories.

When micro tops first appeared at Karl Lagerfeld’s 1996 Chanel Spring-Summer fashion show, the designer immediately garnered a lot of attention with this eye-catching detail. While many trends from the ’90s and 2000s are making their way back into fashion, it’s no surprise that micro tops are following the same path. Along with ’90s beauty looks, Y2K and maximalist fashion, the 2020s are bringing old trends back to life.

If we look at this trend from another angle; More and more celebrities are supporting the #FreetheNipple movement. They especially prefer transparent dresses that show a glimpse of the bare body, and they accept this as a sign of female empowerment. In this way, Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, Chiara Ferragni, Julia Fox and others are claiming the right of every woman to decide about her body (including whether or not to display it).

With the growth of this trend, designers began to offer garments filled with sheer and cut-outs that emphasized female forms. They also thought for those who don’t want total nudity but want to send a message of independence, strength and beauty. Micro tops, not only spring-summer 2023 podiums; they also offer a fun and cool alternative to the bold trend that unexpectedly affects the fall-winter 2023/24 collections.
