Gone are the days of butterfly tops, now designers are returning to the rock star aesthetic. Based on the rebellious freedom of post-pandemic life, the latest nostalgia-driven trend traverses the 2000s and embraces ’70s punk-rock legends.

While TikTok is leading the rise of the “rock star’s girlfriend” genre, we prefer to abandon the dating element and embody the hedonistic and rebellious spirit of our favorite soloists like Mick Jones, Johnny Ramones, and Debbie Harry.

The original punk scene was filled with provocative ensembles that challenged and overturned the status quo. At the head of this pioneering movement was none other than Vivienne Westwood, who gained popularity with her clothing boutique “SEX”.

Punk is returning to the forefront of the season with futuristic, rebellious and bold pieces made with plaid, leather or heavy metal trim, as we’ve witnessed at Louis Vuitton, Dior, Givenchy, Versace and more.

A favorite of the style scene, plaid has been secretly leading the punk resurgence for seasons. Names like Bella Hadid, Mia Regan, Iris Law, Lila Moss, and Stella Jones tend to dress inspired by the punk community. Considering their trend towards plaid skirts and eccentric patterns months before the trend became popular, they could definitely be the standout names for this aesthetic.

The visual and incongruous spirit of the trend is closely linked to the liberating feelings that come with the new found freedom post-pandemic. With the reopening of a world arranged like a blank slate, people are trying to reform and transform the world. Loud and rebellious voices are deemed necessary to break solid thought patterns in order to make a real change and make an impact.
