Dermatology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Filiz Topaloğlu Demir pointed out that there are serious changes in our eating habits, water consumption and sleep patterns along with fasting in Ramadan. Pointing out that in addition to a balanced diet for skin health, daily adequate water consumption and regular sleep are required, Assoc. Dr. Demir made suggestions.
Being dehydrated impairs skin health
Although it varies from person to person, from iftar to sahur, an average of 2 liters of water should be consumed daily. Care should be taken to complete the regular sleep period of 7-8 hours recommended for adult individuals. Since our skin is dehydrated during this period, it should be moisturized more than usual. Moisturizers suitable for our skin type should be repeated at regular intervals during the day and should be applied one last time before going to bed at night. Eye area and lips should not be forgotten. The water content must be above 10 percent for the skin to maintain its normal appearance. In cases where it is less than 10 percent, dry skin is mentioned. People who are dehydrated may experience dryness, tightness and itching on the skin, a rough appearance, flaking, fine lines and cracks.
For skin health, fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, especially citrus fruits, broccoli, green pepper, kiwi and strawberries, fish, liver, eggs, milk and dairy products rich in vitamin A, beta carotene, the precursor of vitamin A, are rich , carrots, tomatoes, cabbage and fresh fruits should be consumed in certain proportions in legumes together with nuts such as almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts, as they are rich in vitamin E.
Use a humidifier
The main purpose of using a humidifier is to maintain the ideal amount of water in the skin. For this purpose, substances with occlusive properties (occlusives) and substances with desiccant properties (humectants) are used together in humidifiers. In addition, not washing with very cold or hot water, and choosing cleaners suitable for the pH value of the skin (between 4 and 6) in daily care, excluding dirty leather cleaning, are other points to be considered.
It is very important to choose products containing sunscreen during the day. Moisturizer should be applied to the whole body while the skin is slightly damp within 3 minutes after bathing. Those who cannot go out due to quarantine can use olive oil or sunflower oil to moisturize the body after bathing, and pure white vaseline to moisturize their hands in addition to these. However, it should be kept in mind that vegetable oils and vaseline do not have moisture-retaining properties, they are not ideal moisturizers, and they cannot be used in every skin type and in every region.
