Hyperactivity does not determine intelligence

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Specialist Dr. Seheryeli Yılmaz stated that the difficulties experienced by the families in their school application had an important role in their application to the clinic. Stating that this disease can also be seen in adults, Yılmaz said “ADHD is a disease independent of intelligence” .

Outpatient clinic applications Dr. Seheryeli Yılmaz said that Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is noticed by families especially in preschool and school-age children, can be seen in many children. Yılmaz, “Parents; he talks about clumsiness, hyperactivity, difficulties in obeying the rules and in friendships, frequent accidents, intense seizures and risky behaviors in the pre-school period; however, diagnosis and outpatient visits are often made during the school period. I would like to remind families that ADHD is not a disease directly related to the intelligence of the child. Whether the child’s mental development is superior, normal or lagging is a condition independent of the presence of ADHD” .

ADHD can be without hyperactivity

Especially children with hyperactivity symptoms exhibit more maladaptive behaviors in the classroom environment than other children, more often with peers. Stating that he was exposed to bullying, Specialist Dr. Seheryeli Yılmaz, “The observations of parents and teachers at school play a very important role when we make a diagnosis. While children with impulsive and hyperactivity stand out in the classroom environment, only children with attention deficit complaints can be overlooked without any signs of excessive physical activity. The word Hyperactivity, that is, ‘excessive physical activity’, is not a determining factor for all, it can be said that there are many ADHD cases in which excessive physical activity is not seen. The most obvious complaint frequently observed in these cases is that their attention span is too short, they get bored very quickly when doing tasks and homework, and In some people with ADHD, excessive physical activity and impulsivity are at the forefront, while in others, complaints such as difficulty in focusing and reduced attention span may come to the fore” .

It can also be seen in adults

Noting that 1 out of 3 children with ADHD continues to have ADHD in adulthood, Yılmaz said, “ADHD is more common in children and young people, but Adults can also have attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. ADHD is a genetically transmitted disorder with a neurobiological basis. The only treatment method with proven effectiveness in the treatment of ADHD is the use of medication. The effects of the drugs used in the treatment of ADHD on the brain are not at an enjoyable level, and they do not carry the risk of addiction with appropriate and recommended use. We know that the risk of cigarette-alcohol-substance abuse and addiction is higher in those with ADHD, and studies have shown that this risk decreases significantly with treatment. With drug treatment, it provides an improvement of 75-85%. Studies have shown that none of all other non-drug alternative treatments (including psychotherapies) can reach the effectiveness of drug treatment. Since ADHD is a disease that disrupts the child’s adaptation to school, home, and all environments in which he enters the community, it is recommended to be used without interruption of treatment on weekends and in the summer period” .

Hyperactivity does not determine intelligence

Stating that there is a perception that hyperactive children are intelligent among the public, but this is a false information, Yılmaz “The child can be very attentive in situations such as the Internet, television, which attracts your child’s attention, likes and enjoys it. The main problem in attention deficit is that he can focus on the subject in activities such as homework, task, project, etc. that he should take responsibility for, start the work, continue the work he has started, and pay attention in the face of stimuli. When it disperses, it quickly focuses on that subject again. Studies have shown that hyperactivity is a condition independent of intelligence” .
