The plot of Banshees of Inisher is pretty simple: An Irish man named Colm (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly decides he doesn’t want to be friends with another Irishman named Pádraic (Colin Farrell) anymore. Pádraic begs Colm to tell him what he did wrong, and Colm calmly replies that Pádraic did nothing wrong. After years of daily bar visits together, Colm asks Pádraic to leave him alone and never speak to him again.
Pádraic refuses to leave the matter here. Colm isn’t hard to find, given that two men lived in side streets on an island off the coast of Ireland in 1923. Eventually, Pádraic learns with a little help from his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) that Colm has decided to break up with him because he finds him boring. Colm states that he doesn’t want to spend his remaining years in this world talking about nothing at the bar.
Colm plays the violin and has ambitions to be a great musician. He tells Pádraic that since the two old friends stopped talking, he’s been working much harder on a song he considers his masterpiece.
Pádraic continues to talk to Colm. Therefore, Colm tells his old friend that he will either leave him alone or cut off one of his left fingers whenever Pádraic bothers him. The local police officer’s young, troubled son, Dominic (Barry Keoghan), becomes Pádraic’s new drinking buddy and encourages him to see Colm’s bluff about the finger threat. But this is not a bluff…
Colm is a thinker, as the villagers say; he preoccupies himself with philosophical questions and devotes the rest of his life (because he believes he will only live twelve years) to studying the meaning of his existence. He wants to leave his mark on the world, plays the violin and often compares his life with that of Mozart. Pádraic, on the other hand, is one of life’s good men, as the villagers say, and does not know who Mozart is; He is interested in what he discovers in the excrement of cows, donkeys and horses. He believes it is important to be nice to the people around him and claims that people will be remembered only for their kindness. Pádraic, like his brother Siobhán Súilleabháin (Kerry Condon), is not concerned with worldly pleasures and goals, such as leaving home. Siobhán Súilleabháin has dreams of her own.
Batman’s new Joker, Barry Keoghan, plays Dominic, a local boy who helps Pádraic figure out why Colm is no longer his friend; Kerry Condon plays Siobhán, Pádraic’s infuriated sister.
The Banshees of Inisherin, while ludicrous at times, is distinctly sad, like McDonagh’s other work. Set entirely on a small island of Ireland, the film has a light touch. In fact, it has such a light touch that sometimes you may not even realize what is going on.
McDonagh’s drama serves as a wonderful allegory to the act of going at war with yourself, as Colm and Pádraic examine the shared bonds between friends.

Originally Martin McDonagh’s film was shot on Inis Mor, the largest island in the Aran Islands archipelago off the west coast of Ireland. Why is Colm’s song not heard in the movie?

This is the story of The Banshees of Inisherin, Colm’s inclination to isolation, despair; allows him to refute his belief that meaningful art and self-expression are the root. Early in their hostilities, Colin Farrell’s character points out to Colm that being less friendly and more distant is not a conduit for making better or more effective music. Instead, The Banshees of Inisherin focuses on Colm’s horrific acts of self-mutilation when Pádraic cuts off the character’s finger every time Pádraic tries to talk to him. This erratic move means Colm is unable to play his instrument at the end of the comedy-drama, while Pádraic is determined to continue their feud until his old friend dies. Many people wonder if the movie is based on a true story. The Golden Globe winner turned out to be a complete work of fiction.
